There is a "sneak path" through the middle of the border to make maintenance easier. The drainage swale along the back of the border conveys water from the driveway to the lawn area.

Stormwater Management in Tarrytown
Dry river beds, swales, dry wells and infiltration trenches (plus trees, shrubs and perennials) were installed to prevent the back yard from being flooded by water flowing from the neighboring uphill properties.
